What is Kari’s Law?

In December 2013, Kari Hunt was killed by her estranged husband in a motel room in Texas. Her 9-year-old daughter attempted to dial 911, but the motel phone required “9” to be dialed to reach any outside line, including emergency services. This event launched Kari’s Law, which requires all organizations or businesses that use a multi-line telephone system (MLTS) to provide direct access to 911.

What to Do:

  • Contact the provider of your MLTS and ask how their product is set up to reach 911 without requiring an additional digit such as “9” or “1.” 
  • If your provider does not offer a direct line, find out how and when they will be in compliance with Kari’s Law. Contact the Calvert County non-emergency number at 410-535-3491 if you need additional information. 
  • To schedule a test for your MLTS contact your Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP or 911 call center) at 410-535-3491, for a test time. 

FAQs

Question: If a violation is found, how long do I have to fix it?
Answer: One month.

Question: When will I be fined if I am found not compliant with Kari’s Law?
Answer: No fines will occur until June 24, 2024. Calvert County is focused on educating businesses and organizations about Kari’s Law.

Question: When will these inspections occur?
Answer: Inspections will occur during the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s fire safety inspections. However, if there is a location in which a 911 call does not work per Kari’s Law, an inspection will occur shortly thereafter.
