Cove Point Park Playground Renovation

Project Overview

The large playground in the front of Cove Point Park was installed in 2007 and is due for replacement. Serving tens of thousands of visitors each year, this popular destination in the growing Lusby area supports both neighborhood and regional park users. Families often visit while using nearby amenities such as the athletic fields and pool complex.

The recently completed Cove Point Park Master Plan envisioned the playground as “the perimeter anchor…near the sport field complex providing flexibility for park users with children of differing age groups.”

In summer 2025, the Calvert County Department of Parks & Recreation (CCPR) requested preliminary design concepts and cost estimates from two companies: Playground Specialists, Inc. and GameTime/Cunningham Recreation. Based on past positive experience and excellent references, CCPR selected Playground Specialists to advance the design.

Two playground concepts were presented to the public through a survey open from late October through late November 2025 to gather community feedback and help guide the final design. Nearly 2,400 residents engaged with the survey and CCPR used that information to develop the final concept with the team from Playground Specialists. Their piggybacked contract was vetted by Finance & Budget, reviewed by the County Attorney, and the County Administrator approved the proposal in December 2025.
